Notting Hill: The Ledbury and Melt (a chocolate connoiseur's dream)
When walking through Notting Hill on a nice summer's day, you can't help but feel overwhelmed by the number of people crammed onto the footpath heading through to Portobello Road, or tourists coming to take some photos next to the famed blue door. It comes as a relief that establishments like The Ledbury are here.
Nestled on the quieter side of Notting Hill on Ledbury Road, The Ledbury is an oasis to head for on a nice summer's day for a long (and maybe a VERY long) lunch. It is the sister restaurant of famed ‘The Square’ restaurant, a 2 michelin-starred situated in at the heart of Mayfair in London. Both establishments are headed by chef Philip Howard.
Our table of five fell in love with The Ledbury right from the word ‘Go’; our amuse bouche: Foie Gras on wafer-thin crisps seemed very familiar, yet slightly accented with sprinkled roasted sesame. Our starters were equally amazing with a terrine of bresse chicken and foie gras, and ceviche of hand-dived scallops.
The star of the meal was the assiette of hebidean lamb, done 3 different ways: seared, slow-cooked (lamb shoulder), and the most heavenly of the three; the lamb tongue which had the most creamy, most crisp of textures. The lamb though, in all its glory, was not the centrepiece of this dish. What was even more spectacular was the aubergine glazed with miso and garlic which in itself with its slightly sweet, caramel flavours left us desiring more!
While you're in the neighbourhood, make sure you check out Melt, which has the most amazing handmade chocolates. It has truly some of the most amazing inventions possible (who would think salted caramel chocolate could turn out to be such heaven in your mouth!). Head Chocolatier, Chika Watanabe, should be praised for handcrafting such delectable and divine morsels.
The Ledbury Menu - June 2009:
Terrine of bresse chicken, foie gras, and cepe with grean beans, white peach and fresh almonds
Ceviche of hand dived scallops with seaweed and herb oil, kohirabi, and frozen horseradish
Roast baby monkfish with pea puree and hand rolled macaroni stuffed with bacon and majoram
Assiette of hebidean lamb with green tomato juice, spinach puree, and an aubergine glazed with miso and garlic
Opera gateau with homeycomb, chicory and black pepper ice cream
Pressed gariguette strawberries with hibiscus and warm vanilla churros
Caramelised banana galette with salted caramel and peanut ice cream
