On The Streets of Kuala Lumpur: Wong Ah Wah and Delicious
People who know a Malaysian will nod when I say this: Malaysians are OBSESSED with food! When you talk to any Malaysian regardless of what country you're in, the conversation is likely to veer very quickly to the topic of food. And it doesn't just end at the talking! Most Malaysians will travel miles and miles to a specific restaurant or hawker store for one particular specialty, and then traipse to another side of the city for another! It's madness I tell you (and include me in that basket too :)).
So on a not-so-typical night in Kuala Lumpur, bathed in the lights reflecting off the Petronas Twin Towers whilst being chauffeured through the busy humid city streets, we were lucky enough to sample some of the cream-of-the-crop in KL smorgasbord.
Our first stop was along Jalan Alor. The street itself was a hive of activity; hawker store and restaurants ran the whole length of the street. Vendors selling anything from cockles cooked over hot charcoal, to Char Kuey Teow, Hor Fun and piping hot bowls of Laksa. The sights and smells through the street were themselves enticing.
Wong Ah Wah is a totally unassuming restaurant when you walk in from frantic Jalan Alor. Friendly staff greeted us, and we were left with menus with pictures (which to an asian like me with no real ability to read chinese or malay is a God-send). Minutes later we were greeted with some of the most amazing food I've ever tasted. Prawns with salted egg: slightly fried prawns with salted egg that in itself was more of a creamy, slightly cheesy flavour. The Satay Chicken was to-die-for, slightly smoke, slightly caramelly, served with spicy peanut sauce and refreshing cucumber and rice cubes. And to top off the meal, Wong Ah Wah's specialty; barbecued chicken wings straight off the charcoal, glutinous morsels worth every single bite.
From our lovely evening starting point, we were driven through to the oasis known as Delicious. Part international deli, part cafe, part restaurant, Delicious brings the best of both Western and Eastern foods to KL. We ended our evening with some of the most wonderful desserts: ranging from a Strawberry Shortcake, and Black Forest (and really REALLY good coffee!!! The standard is far beyond most places in London!). We will definitely have to return again to try out Delicious' sumptuous menu!
So with great regret after the short days we had in KL we had to pack up and fly off after our culinary trip. But we do plan to fly over again soon :)
