When people talk about the origin of culinary delights, most people would not immediately think of the English as pioneers in this field. And who would when the first thing that comes into most people's heads when you say English food is Fish and Chips with Mushy Peas?!

But with Dinner by Heston, Heston Blumenthal (known for his forays into molecular gastronomy at the Fat Duck), challenges diners on that concept, showcasing a number of contemporary takes on dishes found in old English cookbooks that have been, until now, lost with time itself. In interviews prior to it's opening, Heston has mentioned that Dinner by Heston (now headed by chef Ashley Palmer-Watts) was a step away from the theatrical and quirky which made the Fat Duck, but more a dining experience he hopes to people would want to repeat.

Nestled just behind London's Hyde Park at the glamouous Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge, Dinner by Heston brings diners back in time, as far back as the 15th century, to experience his take on what food was like in England during those times. The dining room is decorated with cogs like the inside of a clock with bunts being used as lighting, and on one side the kitchen showcasing its chefs like part of the clockwork of the restaurant, creating dishes for the ravenous people outside.

The most stand-out dishes were the Meat Fruit (with it's light and airy parfait to it's tangy outer citrusy skin), the meaty pig-ear ragoo with it's big hearty flavours, the melt-in-the mouth powdered duck (with it's sweet and sticky, almost gooey skin), the boozy buttery crispiness of the Tipsy Cake with the smokey spit-roasted pinapple, and caramelly crunchy Orange Buttered Loaf balancing with the tartness of the mandarin and thyme sorbet.

What makes Dinner by Heston stand on it's own away from The Fat Duck is it's different approach to the dining experience. Where the latter makes it an awe-inspiring experience, it's what's in the former that makes diners interested to want to come back for more.... and this particular diner here can't wait to try another morsel :)
