Having now lived in London for over four years, we have been spoilt for choice when looking for some brilliant food in a casual pub setting; a concept that at the time of migrating from Sydney a few years ago was still either geared towards the quick and simple suburban thai or chinese in a pub, or the cheap and greasy food needing a strong wash-down with a pint of Fosters or VB. So it was exciting to hear that the gastropub concept was fast developing in Sydney; with places that are not only casual enough to have a few pints, but also a place to dine on some brilliant quality unpretentious pub food.

Montpellier Public House is run by Matthew Kemp, a chef from the UK who had previously wowed us with some amazing food when he was still running Balzac at the same space only a few years ago. While Balzac was an opulent experience, it was one that this particular blogger didn't feel could be done often. Montpellier on the other hand has stripped that experience back to the bare essentials; a casual setting, attentive service, and most important of all fantastic casual pub food with Kemp's inventive flair.

We started with a number of small plates to share from the still-runny crispy gooey goodness of the Pigeon and Foie Gras Scotch Egg, to the melt-in-the-mouth Jacobs Ladder of beef topped with huge crunchy onion rings, to the fluffy Hand-Cut Chips with Bearnaise sauce. This was followed by the slight sweet and saltiness of Montpellier's own sausages in their 'Bangers and Mash', the tender morsels of the 8-Hour Shoulder of Lamb with Tomatoes, Courgettes, Bortolli Beans and Mint, and the fall-apart in the mouth beef brisket with the Kipfler Potatoes, Savoy Cabbage and grain mustard.

The stars of the night came with our dessert with one of the best Eton Mess' I've ever had in the southern hemisphere, a moreish Trifle of Poached Pear, White Chocolate and Almonds, and comforting buttermilk pudding with a malty sweet plum and brown sugar compote.

With such amazing food and at such a casual setting, it is definitely one place this particular blogger can see himself coming back to again and again whenever he is back in Sydney and looking for a certain piece of the comfort, the liveliness, and the wonderful food that has been synonymous of the London gastropub scene.
